Optional Assignment #3 : QR Code + Business Card / Flyer / Sticker (+3 points)
Optional Assignment #4 : Augmented Reality
Optional Assignment #1 : Working with Audio
- Use Audacity to record a short 10-30 second audio “broadcast” that includes your voice and some external sound effects. Complete directions on how to do this can be found here (follow steps 1 & 2).
- Save your file as an MP3 file. Note that Audacity does not come with the ability to save MP3 files, but you can change by installing the open-source LAME audio encoder library http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#lame
- You can incorporate your newly created audio file into your website.
- Next, create a “podcast” by constructing an XML document that organizes your broadcast so that it can be “subscribed” to by visitors on the web. Complete directions on how to do this can be found here (follow steps 3 & 4).
Optional Assignment #3 : QR Code + Business Card / Flyer / Sticker (+3 points)
- First, create a QR code for your website. Here are two techniques for doing this:
- Google URL Shortener
- Begin by visiting the shortener here: http://goo.gl/
- Next, paste in the absolute hyperlink to your website to have Google create a shortened version of it.
- Click on the “Details” link next to your shortened URL – you will see a QR code at the top right side of the screen. Click on this code to open it in a new window and save it to your computer.
- Advantages: The Google URL shortener will keep track of usage stats for your QR code (i.e. you can always log back into the product and see how many times the code has been scanned)
- Disadvantages: The QR code that is generated can be a bit small
- goqr.me
- Visit http://goqr.me/
- Select URL fro the tab along the top
- Paste in an absolute hyperlink to your site
- Save the generated code
- Advantages: Codes produced in this way will be much larger than the ones generated by the Google technique outlined above. You can also create custom “non-URL” based QR codes.
- Disadvantages: No tracking of the use of your code.
- Google URL Shortener
- Next, create a new print-based document to advertise your website. This could be a business card, a flyer, a sticker – whatever you’d like. Include the QR code in your design. You can use InDesign or Photoshop to do this.
- Place a copy of your design on your website so that we can view it when we visit your page.
Optional Assignment #4 : Augmented Reality
- Create your own augmented reality series of “place marks” that map out some of your favourite parts of the city or the school. For example, you might identify Surrey Central, Holland Park, or Science World as some points of interest.
