Computer Buying Research Project
In this project you will research 4 Computers to purchase. You will fill out the buying sheet for each separate computer.
Here is the Computers that you want to Research…
Then you will "build" your own "dream" computer by using various on-line sites to "spec" out the various components you want in your ideal computer.
Remember: You must be able to explain the specs…Processor, Memory (RAM), Hard Drive, etc. If you don’t understand them, LOOK IT UP.
Must pick the one out of the four that you want the most and why.
Things to consider:
Using your knowledge of the parts of a computer, your job is to now "build" your ultimate computer. You must find the price of the various parts of a computer you would like to build, based on whether you want it to be as fast as possible, as reasonably priced as possible, or somewhere in the middle of both that balances performance and cost.
Use the following websites, or any other online computer store to find and price the essential components listed below.
http://www.ncix.com/pcbuilder/
http://www.tigerdirect.ca
http://www.newegg.ca/computer-hardware/store
List your choices for the following components (including brand & model), why you chose what you did, include the cost of each part, and the total cost of your resulting computer system:
To earn extra marks, rather than posting the information about your "dream" computer directly on your webpage, you can create an Excel spread sheet using correct calculations functions (SUM) of the information and post that on your webpage.
Assignment #1 - Buliding Your Own Computer. Using the information discussed in class on the SmartBoard and from the following website (http://www.kids-online.net/learn/click/table.html) - Parts of a Computer makes notes of the definitions for each computer part shown on your handout. You can also use Wikipedia or Webopedia to find further information.
From these notes, you will create a PowerPoint presentation describing all the basic parts you need to build your own computer. Each slide will contain a single part with the following information:
1) Price
2) Description including brand or vendor name
3) Picture of item
You will need to buy the parts at a Canadian online computer store. Two example you can visit are:
NCIX (http://www.ncix.com/)
Tigerdirect (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/)

Things to consider:
- Who is the manufacturer of the PC?
- What kind of processor does this PC have?
- What are the specs of the processor? Also tell me what they mean.
- What is the hard drive capacity? Do you have the option to get a solid state storage drive?
- How much RAM does the PC have?
- What type of removable storage does it have? (CD‑R/RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW) or none?
- List any software included.
- What is the monitor size?
- Misc. Options
- Are you getting a printer? If so, what kind?
- What type of warranty is included? How much does this cost?
- Which retailer advertised this system? Or did you buy this direct from the manufacturer (i.e. Dell, Apple, etc.)
- What is the total cost of the system (computer, monitor, printer) BEFORE TAXES!!!
