Intro to i-Movie
(Thanks to Mr. Hubbick for getting this started)
This assignment is designed to get you working with different media, and combining them into an iMovie video slide show. You will learn to save photos to your computer, import them into iMovie, and create a video slide show with the images changing every 5 seconds. You will also create a voice narration that describes what the slide show is about, why you chose the images that are being used. You will also add music or sound effects to the slideshow, as well as titles and text descriptions.
1. Select and save 10 images to your student folder. They can be your personal photos, but all images must be school appropriate, and they should represent some kind of theme or subject that you are interested in. For example they could be your favourite musicians, sports stars, food, or whatever you would like to showcase.
2. Start iMovie, and create a New Project called p2_your name_slideshow. Then drag the pictures that you saved to your student folder into the Project timeline (where it looks like empty film strip). You will notice that any still images will be added to your timeline as 4 second video clips, and will probably automatically have the Ken Burns Effect applied to them. You can adjust the length of the clip by clicking on the blue Settings icon (looks like a gear) in the bottom left corner of the clip, selecting Clip Adjustments, and changing the duration to 5 seconds from the default 4 seconds. You can also change the cropping and other settings here... select Cropping, etc. to change the image from having the Ken Burns slow zoom/pan effect to Fit if you don't like the effect.
3. Once you have added all the images to the Timeline, you can move them around into whatever order you like, just make sure that you've changed them all to 5 seconds long.
4. Then add a text caption to the image by selecting the Titles ( T ) button on the right, and choosing one of the Titling text options. Be careful to choose a style that does not obscure important parts of the picture! Make sure your spelling and grammar are correct... nothing looks worse than incorrect spelling on a video!
5. Write out a short narration for your video slide show that tells the viewer a little bit about the theme of your project. You will then record your narration as a voice over. Click the microphone button in the middle bar between the viewer and the timeline, and it will say in the viewer window "Click clip to start recording." Click on the clip where you want the narration to begin, and then it will countdown 3 seconds to when it will start recording... recite your narration accordingly. It doesn't necessarily have to go over the entire video, but it can if you'd like it to.
6. You can now add music or sound effects to your video by dragging an mp3 file onto the timeline, or selecting a sound effect by clicking on the music note button on the left of the middle bar, and selecting iLife Sound Effects and dragging the sound effect to where you want it to play on the video.
7. You can add transitions to the images which change the way the pictures move from one to the next in the video. Click on the square with the triangles in it (next to the Titles button) on the left of the centre bar.
8. Once you've put the finishing touches on the video slide show, you need to export the video by clicking on the Share menu, then selecting Share with Quicktime, and using the default settings, export the video to the Movies folder on your computer, and then call the teacher over to come collect your finished product.
