Being on the computer and using technology does not come without risks. So how does one go about protecting yourself an your information?
The Big Questions:
- What are the dangers?
- How do you protect yourself?
Task 1 - Learning the Lingo
Use the internet to discover the meaning of the following terms. There are a lot of them, so you might want to work in partners or small groups to make the task easier. You should present your findings in your weebly (or other class site)
- Netizen
- Identity Theft
- Cookie
- Cache
- Drive-by downloads
- Spam
- Spoofing
- Scams
- Phishing
- Email Scavenger
- Cyberbullying
- Cyberstalking
- Throwaway email account
- Piracy and copyright infringement
Task 2: In Depth Research
- Having gotten a handle on the language involved in digital safety, hopefully something has piqued your interest. Your task is to find an area of specific interest to you and do some additional research. Not only do you have to define the topic, but you also have to choose how to represent your findings and solutions.
- Can't think of any ideas... below are a couple that could get the ball rolling.
Scams - Too Good to Be True
"There ain't no such thing as a free lunch." - A fancy way of saying that nothing is really free - you pay for it one way or another. And if an offer seems too good to be true, chances are it isn't true.
Scams appeal to your natural instinct to trust people. They appeal to your greed. They appeal to your desires. And sometimes they can be hard to resist.
The reason there is so much of it out there is because so much of it works. That's right - people wouldn't send spam if it weren't for the fact that they do make money at it all. And scams exist because scams work.
You may be thinking to yourself, "No way - I'm too smart to be taken." But let me tell you - those people are very good at what they do. Even the smartest, most vigilant people sometimes get tricked.
Your job is to research the types of scams that are out there preying on the vulnerable - maybe even you. To report back on your findings, and to offer suggestions has to how people can protect themselves.
